Freequently Asked Questions
Are air filters really that important?
Air filters are critical; they’re far and away, the top reason we get called in for service. Dirty filters restrict the airflow through the ductwork and make the system work much harder, like driving a car with one foot on the brake and one on the gas. Dirty air filters will not only raise your energy bill but may also damage your unit beyond repair. Unfortunately, we can’t count the number of heat pumps we’ve replaced because the filter didn’t get changed often enough.
You should change your air filter every ninety days – that’s just four times a year, and it could save you thousands in energy bills and costs for repair or replacement.
Is there any real value in having a routine maintenance schedule?
Extensive studies by recognized national groups have shown that clean, maintained air conditioning systems last longer, cost less, and have substantially fewer mechanical failures when a trained professional perform routine maintenance.
We feel so strongly about preventive maintenance that we have developed a customized and detailed plan to offer our customers. Just like you need to take your car into the shop for routine tune-ups, such as oil changes or looking at potential problems, your home comfort system should be subject to the same kind of attention. Regular maintenance by a skilled technician provides various benefits to your HVAC equipment, which can help your systems perform efficiently and prevent costly breakdowns. So give us a call, and we’ll be happy to review it with you at your convenience.
Will my thermostat automatically turn on emergency heat when it gets really cold outside?
A heat pump thermostat will not do this automatically. When your thermostat is on the HEAT setting, it always turns the heat pump on. When the thermostat is 2 degrees or more above the room temperature, it will turn on the electric heat in your furnace to assist the heat pump. After it has satisfied the room temperature, it will turn the heat pump on alone on the next cycle.
What is the emergency heat setting for?
The HEAT setting on your thermostat is recommended when your heat pump cannot maintain the room temperature. If you move the switch on your thermostat to HEAT, the thermostat will turn off the heat pump and turn on the backup heat (usually electric heat) inside your furnace. We recommend most customers do this if the outdoor temperature is 20 degrees or lower. This will typically warm up your home and shut off quicker than running the heat pump. We sell and install an additional control, an outdoor thermostat, that will cause the system to change over automatically. Ask your service technician for details.
How much should I budget for a new HVAC system?
The cost can range depending on the equipment size and different features, so we recommend contacting A Family’s Future LLC at 314.503.9944 to receive a quote.
What is the minimum energy efficiency standard for air conditioners in my state?
Different regions have different minimum energy efficiency standards. Additionally, air conditioners, heat pumps, and packaged units made after January 1, 2015, have higher minimum efficiency levels than products manufactured before that date.
The team at A Family’s Future Heating & Cooling can help you determine the minimum requirements for your area and let you know if your current system meets those requirements or help you find a replacement air conditioner that does.
How can I improve my utility costs?
A significant portion of your monthly energy bills can be attributed to your heating and cooling system. It makes sense because our home comfort is vital to our day-to-day lives. Luckily, high-efficiency solutions from A Family's Future Heating and Cooling LLC can keep you comfortable while also decreasing energy costs.
When it's time for you to shop for a new HVAC system, there are a couple of things to consider. First, you'll want to find air conditioners with high SEER ratings and furnaces with high AFUE ratings. These ratings measure efficiency, so the bigger the number, the better off you'll be when saving on energy costs. You can also consider these tips:
- Keep your system operating to its best ability by booking routine maintenance. It helps sustain efficiency and make sure everything is working correctly.
- Consider a zoning system if you only have specific rooms that need to be heated or cooled. There is no need to use energy to adjust the temperature in a room that is rarely used.
- The U.S. Department of Energy states that programmable thermostats can save up to 35% on heating and 25% on cooling costs. There are a lot of programmable and smart thermostat products that are easy to use and vary in the number of features, so you can find an option that you are comfortable with and love.
